Lean Laboratory - Give your lab the edge

Key lean lab concepts 3 – Levelling, Flow, Defined Sequences & Roles (Standard Work)

Here Tom examines the key lean lab concepts of levelling, flow, defined sequences and roles (standard work):

  • Level the load and the mix as much as possible (Heijunka).
  • Develop continuous Flow wherever possible (and less continuous flow elsewhere).
  • Send Customer Demand to one Process Step - “Pacemaker” (and flow thereafter) and FIFO with no overtaking.
  • Resource and Test to the Levelled demand rate.
  • Standardise and Balance the work (via defined sequences / roles).

"Our laboratory performance has been transformed as a result of the lean project we have just completed. We were surprised how quickly BSM were able to understand the complexities of our lab and then apply appropriate lean principles to address our major issues."

Neil Sheahan, Analytical Laboratory Manager
